What is Naturopathy?
A Greek philosopher by the name of Hippocrates believed in viewing the whole person in regards to finding a cause of disease, and using the laws of nature to induce care. It is said that this was the birth of Naturopathic care!
Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) focus on not only a patient’s symptoms but also on underlying conditions. NDs treat the root causes of disease and address risk factors by using a variety of natural and conventional therapies. Their spectrum consistent of more than just nutrition, fasting, water an exercise. It also includes Homeopathy, Herbal Medicine an Acupuncture and body work. In a time when modern technology, environmental pollution, poor diet, and stress play a significant role in degradation of health, a Naturopath’s ability to apply natural methods of healing is of considerable importance.
The Guiding Principles of Naturopathic Medicine
- Treat the whole person – when preparing a treatment plan, all aspects of a person’s being are taken into consideration
- Identify and treat the cause – there is always an underlying cause, whether it be physical or emotional
- Identifying the unique aspect of each patient and then using non-toxic natural therapies to restore his/her physiological, psychological, and structural balance
- Prevention is better than cure – may remove toxic substances and situations from a patient’s lifestyle to prevent the onset of further disease
How Can Naturopathic Medicine Benefit You?
Naturopathic physicians can help with treating chronic conditions that don’t respond to conventional medicine. They can respond to the individuals needs and develop a treatment plan specific to them.
Naturopathic physicians understand the art of healing, which is more than dispensing a herbal remedy or nutritional supplement.
What to Expect for Treatment
The initial consultation with the Naturopath will be a very extensive patient history exam, gathering information about your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and a complain-orientated physical exam performed. The Naturopath may look at the tongue or nails, as well as do functional laboratory testing to determine the complete health status of the patient. Once all the information is gathered, a treatment plan will be made that is specific to the individual patient.
